The collaborative family law practice is a comparatively new way of dealing with family disputes. It is intended to be more cooperative and less confrontational that a traditional, litigation based approach. Each person appoints their own lawyer but instead of conducting negotiations by letter or telephone there are a series of face to face meetings involving clients and their solicitors with a view to reaching an agreement. The procedure is intended to be more open and conciliatory and specifically incorporates a written commitment by the clients and the solicitors to endeavour to reach an agreement rather than involve the courts.
